Chapter 3

Confessions of the Heart

Back at Benjamin's place, they shared a cozy dinner of pasta and garlic bread, laughter filling the small apartment. But as the night wore on, tension built between them. Lucy could feel it, a tangible thing winding tighter with every stolen glance and unintentional brush of hands.

Benjamin broke the silence first, setting down his wine glass with a sigh. "I've been thinking," he began, tracing circles on the tablecloth.

Lucy's stomach fluttered nervously. "About what?"

He hesitated, then looked at her, his expression serious. "Our friendship... it means everything to me, Lucy."

Her heart sank, but she managed a smile. "It means everything to me too."

He reached out, taking her hand in his. His thumb brushed over her knuckles, sending shivers up her arm. "I don't want to mess that up," he continued, his voice barely above a whisper. "But there are times when I look at you... and I wonder what it would be like if there was more."

Lucy held her breath, hope swelling within her. "More?" she echoed, her voice barely audible.

Benjamin leaned in closer, his gaze never leaving hers. "More than friends," he clarified softly.

Her heart raced wildly, but she held herself still, afraid to break the spell. "What are you saying, Benjamin?"

He cupped her face, his thumb tracing her cheekbone. "I'm saying that I think... I think I'm falling for you, Lucy."

Before she could respond, his mouth was on hers, soft and warm and full of promises. She melted into him, her fingers tangling in his hair, years of longing pouring into that single kiss. When they finally pulled away, they were both breathless, their foreheads resting against each other.

"I've been so stupid," Benjamin murmured, his hands cupping her face. "I should've seen it earlier."

She smiled, her heart swelling. "We're here now," she whispered back. "That's all that matters."
