Chapter 2

Trails of Longing

The crunch of gravel underfoot echoed their strides as they followed the path into the woods. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the faint scent of pine and earth. Lucy zipped her jacket against the chill, her breath misting in the air.

Benjamin walked beside her, hands tucked into his pockets. He'd been quiet since they'd left, but that was typical Benjamin - deep in thought until he was ready to voice it. She couldn't help but steal glances at him, admiring his profile.

"This reminds me of our first hike," he said suddenly, turning to face her. "Remember?"

She laughed softly. "How could I forget? You tried to lead us off-course because you thought you knew better than the trail map."

His chuckle filled the silence, warm and rich. "Well, I didn't know we were going to stumble upon a hidden waterfall."

"No, you just thought you could navigate us through the woods better than a well-marked trail," she teased, her heart fluttering at the memory. They'd spent hours lost, laughing and exploring until they found their way back. It had been their first adventure together as friends.

Benjamin grinned. "Maybe I should've stuck to that strategy more often."

Lucy punched his arm lightly. "Your ego would've been the death of us."

They continued in companionable silence, their conversation interspersed with laughter and reminiscence. As they climbed higher, the wind picked up, whipping strands of Lucy's hair across her face. She stopped to tuck them back, taking a moment to catch her breath.

"You okay?" Benjamin asked, concern in his eyes.

She nodded, smiling up at him. "I'm good. Just need a second."

He stepped closer, his hand reaching out tentatively to brush a loose strand away from her eyes. His fingers lingered on her cheek, thumb tracing her jawline gently. Time seemed to stand still, their breaths mingling in the cold air between them.

Benjamin's eyes searched hers, questions lingering in their depths. Lucy's heart pounded in her chest, hope rising like a tide. But just as she thought he might lean in to kiss her, he pulled back, clearing his throat.

"Let's keep going," he said gruffly, turning away.

Lucy's heart sank, but she followed him, hiding her disappointment. As they reached the peak, she stood beside him, looking out at the sprawling vista below. Despite the beauty before her, all she could feel was the ache within.
