Chapter 1

The Unspoken

The aroma of fresh coffee wafted through the air as sunlight filtered through the large window, casting a golden glow over the rustic kitchen table where Lucy sat, her gaze fixed on the steaming mug before her. Her fingers traced the rim absently, a habit she'd developed over years of hiding her nervousness. The soft hum of the refrigerator was joined by the creaking of floorboards, announcing Benjamin's arrival.

"Morning, Lucy," he greeted, his voice a warm rumble, eyes already scanning the newspaper he'd fetched from the front porch. His disheveled hair and the way his shirt stretched taut across his broad chest made Lucy's heart flutter. She'd always found him irresistible, but these morning scenes were her undoing.

"Morning," she replied softly, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. She'd learned to keep her emotions hidden, afraid that confessing her feelings would jeopardize their friendship. So, she settled for these stolen moments, grateful for his company even as she yearned for more.

Benjamin poured himself a cup of coffee, then settled beside her. "Any plans today?" he asked, turning a page of the newspaper. His knee brushed hers under the table, sending a jolt through her.

"Not really," she said, trying to ignore the tingling sensation. "You?"

He shrugged. "I thought we could hit the trails. It's been ages since we've been hiking."

Lucy smiled, lightening her features. Hiking had been their thing since college. They'd explored countless trails, sharing stories and laughter. It was on one of those hikes that she'd first realized her feelings, watching him navigate the uneven terrain with confident grace.

"That sounds wonderful," she agreed, standing to clear her mug. As she turned to place it in the sink, Benjamin's hand suddenly wrapped around hers, stilling her. She froze, every sense tingling with awareness.

"Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched in his voice.

She nodded, unable to trust herself to speak. His touch was a spark, igniting an inferno within her that threatened to consume her if she dared to let it. She gently extricated herself from his hold, aware of the deep breath he took as he let her go.

"I'm fine," she finally managed, turning to face him. "Let's go hiking."
