Chapter 8: Keep it Lowkey
It’s a rare comfort in a workplace when a colleague isn't just a workmate, but someone who actually knows you better than anyone else.
"Have you met her already?" I asked him, keeping my voice low."
Teka... Sino ba?" he replied.
Talagang sinagot ng patanong ang tanong ko.
Ang slow naman nitong kausap.
Ahhhh! 'Yung mga bago kong tuturuan?
Siyempre naman!" He grinned, looking incredibly proud of an answer that wasn't even close to what I meant.
"Maliban sa kanila," I sighed, rubbing my temples.
"I mean 'yung maganda—correction, 'yung bagong Team Leader, si Reese. Dapat kayo ang unang magkasundo kasi sa'yo niya i-eendorse 'yung mga associates na kailangan mong i-guide hanggang sa mag-certify sila. Para naman maging productive sila sa operations floor."
I added that last professional bit quickly because mokong was already smirking at me, clearly catching my slip of the tongue.
I looked at him for a moment, the playful smirk fading from my face. I didn't push back, nor did I take his cold tone personally. "Listen to me. Never tell anyone that we know each other outside of this floor. Our history, and especially my background before I transferred here—kept it locked down.
Sometimes in business, it really is better this way. Keeping a tight lid on things prevents any potential conflict of interest—especially if someone decides to dig up his past and use it for a personal vendetta.
In a corporate battlefield like this, information was a weapon. And I wasn't about to hand anyone the ammunition to destroy my friend.
"Got it," I replied, giving him a subtle, reassuring nod.
"Your secret is safe with me, Trainer Gab.
Gabriel stared at me, waiting for my reaction.
"Is that all?" he asked, his voice steady but defensive.
"Yes," I replied, my serious expression instantly melting back into a teasing grin.
"But before I forget—we will be having a meeting shortly. I need you to be there, and I need you to ask Reese to join us. That's your perfect chance to get to know each other."
I caught the sudden, microscopic tightening of Gabriel's shoulders as my words hit him. He had just demanded total secrecy and professional distance, yet fate—and our upcoming meeting schedule—was forcing him straight into her orbit.
