The Shape of Resilience
Not a story, just something I wanted to write down. Read it however you want.
Chapter 1
The sea doesn’t wait for calm skies to be beautiful.
People often talk about the ocean like it’s only beautiful on quiet days. They love the clear water, the soft waves, and the sunlight sparkling on the surface. But the sea is still beautiful when storms roll in, when the waves get messy, and when dark clouds cover the horizon. It doesn’t wait for perfect weather to be worth looking at. It just is, and its value doesn’t change with the forecast.
I think people have a harder time with that idea than they should.
A lot of us end up thinking we have to become some better version of ourselves before we’re allowed to feel proud of who we are. We tell ourselves we’ll be enough once we achieve something, fix every flaw, or finally get our lives together. We spend so much time chasing a future version of ourselves that we forget the person we are right now has already made it through things that once felt impossible. We miss our own growth because we’re too busy focusing on how far we still have to go.
The truth is, nobody gets to live under clear skies all the time. Everyone goes through seasons of uncertainty. Everyone has moments when they feel lost, tired, or overwhelmed by things they can’t control. Storms are always going to show up. Some days the waves are just going to be rough. But none of that cancels out the good in you. It doesn’t take away your worth, your potential, or the progress you’ve already made.
The sea doesn’t stop being an ocean just because a storm moves through it. It doesn’t apologize for being rough or try to hide its waves. It stays huge, powerful, and beautiful no matter what’s happening on the surface. Maybe we should try to see ourselves that way too. Maybe hard days aren’t proof that we’re failing. Maybe they’re just proof that we’re human.
After all, strength has never really been about avoiding storms. It’s about getting through them without forgetting who you are.
And yeah, this isn’t really just about the sea.
Sometimes people seem calm because they’ve gotten good at carrying the storm without letting anyone hear the thunder.
