Chapter 5

Dawn of Understanding

Morning light streamed through the window, casting a golden glow over Benjamin's face as he slept beside Lucy. She watched him, a sense of contentment washing over her. Last night had been perfect - a lifetime of longing finally fulfilled.

Benjamin stirred, his eyes fluttering open to meet hers. He smiled, reaching out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear. "Good morning," he whispered, his voice still heavy with sleep.

"Good morning," she replied, leaning in to kiss him softly.

Breakfast was a quiet affair, their conversation interspersed with glances and smiles that spoke volumes. Yet beneath the surface, Lucy felt unease creeping in. She'd been so caught up in the whirlwind of their newfound relationship that she hadn't stopped to think about what came next.

As if sensing her thoughts, Benjamin reached across the table, taking her hand in his. "What are you thinking about?" he asked gently.

She hesitated, then looked at him, her heart in her eyes. "I'm just wondering where this leaves us," she admitted softly. "What happens now?"

He squeezed her hand reassuringly. "Whatever you want, Lucy. I don't want to rush into anything -"

"I've been in love with you for years, Benjamin," she blurted out, her cheeks flushing at the admission. But now that the words were out, she felt a sense of relief. No more hiding.

Benjamin stared at her, shock written all over his face. "Years?" he echoed.

She nodded, looking down at their entwined hands. "Since college," she confessed softly.

He was silent for a moment before his fingers tilted her chin up, forcing her to meet his gaze. "Why didn't you say anything?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

She shrugged helplessly. "I was scared. I didn't want to jeopardize our friendship. And you seemed content with the way things were."

His thumb brushed against her cheek, a tender gesture that made her heart ache. "I was," he agreed. "But things change, Lucy. And now... now I can't imagine going back to just being friends."

A small smile tugged at her lips. "Neither can I," she admitted.
