Mei was tucked away in the back corner, surrounded by reference books, trying to finish an assignment that felt written in a different language. Suddenly, a shadow fell over her table. She looked up, startled to see Ren standing there, holding a thick volume on classical literature."The other tables are full," he said, his voice low and smooth, devoid of any real emotion. "Do you mind?"
"Oh, no! Go ahead," Mei stammered, pulling her books closer to give him room.
For an hour, the only sound between them was the turning of pages. But as Mei reached across the table to grab her notebook, her elbow clipped her pencil case. Pens and highlighters tumbled across the table, one rolling straight into Ren’s hand.
He caught it effortlessly. As he handed it back, his fingers brushed against hers. Mei froze, noticing for the first time the slight soften in his intense gaze. For a split second, the cold distance between them vanished, replaced by an unspoken curiosity.
