Chapter 1: The Discovery
The wind howled across the mountain pass as Kael pulled his cloak tighter around his shoulders. Three days he had been climbing, following the cryptic map his grandfather had left him before passing.
"It lies beneath the mountain," the old man had whispered, his eyes clouded with memory. "The kingdom that time forgot."
Kael had thought it was the rambling of a dying man. But here, standing before a hidden crevice carved with symbols that predated any language he knew, he began to wonder.
He stepped inside.
The tunnel stretched downward, spiraling into the earth. Torches lined the walls, somehow still burning after what must have been centuries. The air grew warm, thick with the smell of earth and ancient stone.
And then the tunnel opened.
Before him stretched a valley unlike anything he had ever seen. A city of white stone rose from the center, its towers reaching toward a ceiling of glittering crystals that cast an eternal twilight glow over everything.
Eldoria. It was real.
"Welcome, Kael son of Thorne."
The voice came from behind him. He spun, hand going to his sword.
A woman stood there, her skin pale as moonlight, her eyes the color of amethysts. She wore armor of interlocking crystal plates that seemed to pulse with a soft inner light.
"I am Lyra, Captain of the Crystal Guard," she said. "And you have just walked into a war."
