Ghost of you :: Act IV
Chapter 1

For the past month, I've been happy.
She was there when I woke up.
She complained about my messy hair, laughed at my terrible jokes, and reminded me to take my medicine.
At night, she'd rest her head on my shoulder.
"I missed you today."
"I was only at work."
"Too long."
I smiled every time.
Today, I bought her favorite flowers.
"I know you'll say they're a waste of money," I chuckled, setting them beside her.
Then I heard my sister's voice behind me.
"...Who are the flowers for?"
I looked at her like she'd asked the dumbest question.
"For her."
My sister's lips trembled.
"There isn't anyone there."
I frowned.
"Stop it. She's been with me every day."
She covered her mouth to stop herself from crying.
"No..." she whispered. "You've been eating alone. Sleeping alone. Talking to empty rooms."
My chest tightened.
"You're lying."
She stepped closer and hugged me as I stood frozen.
"I'm sorry," she sobbed. "But she's been gone for five years."
I shook my head.
"No."
I looked beside me, waiting for her to laugh and tell me this was all a joke only to find out that the couch is empty.
I looked at the vase where I left fresh flowers that i bought last week, only to find them withered.
I looked around as i called her name.
Nothing.
Again.
Nothing.
The flowers slipped from my hands, and a faded, crumpled note, its edges worn with time, fell from between the stems and landed softly at my feet.
And it says..
“
My love,
Don't worry about me anymore. I'll be watching over you from above.
Promise me you'll take care of yourself. Don't drown your pain in alcohol or neglect yourself. I want you to live your life to the fullest, even if I'm no longer there to see it.
Thank you for being my man. You gave me a love I'll carry with me forever.
I'm sorry I had to leave.
I love you. Always. ”
Only then did I realize something far crueler than losing her.
I had lost her twice.
The day she died.
And the day my mind finally stopped bringing her back.
